What is the Thakhek Loop?

The Thakhek Loop is a 450-kilometer circular route through central Laos, starting and ending in the town of Thakhek. It's considered one of the best scooter adventures in Southeast Asia, taking you through dramatic limestone karst landscapes, massive caves, remote villages, and stunning natural scenery.

Unlike the more touristy areas of Laos, the Thakhek Loop takes you off the beaten path into rural countryside where you'll experience authentic Lao culture and some of the most spectacular landscapes in the country. The highlight is Kong Lor Cave, a 7.5-kilometer cave you can boat through.

3-4 Day Itinerary

Day 1: Thakhek to Kong Lor (130 km)

Start your journey from Thakhek heading east on Route 12. This is the longest day of riding but also one of the most scenic.

Highlights:

  • •Tham Nong Paseum Cave: Stop at this cave with a natural spring pool (20 km from Thakhek)
  • •Buddha Cave (Tham Xieng Liap): Impressive cave with Buddha statues (60 km from Thakhek)
  • •Scenic mountain roads: Winding roads through limestone karst landscapes

Accommodation: Stay in Kong Lor village near the cave entrance. Several guesthouses available.

Day 2: Kong Lor Cave & to Nahin (100 km)

Spend the morning exploring Kong Lor Cave, then continue the loop toward Nahin.

Highlights:

  • •Kong Lor Cave: Take a boat through this spectacular 7.5 km cave (2-3 hours, ~150,000 kip)
  • •Rural villages: Pass through authentic Lao villages along the route
  • •Mountain scenery: Continue through beautiful karst landscapes

Accommodation: Stay in Nahin (also called Lak Sao). Basic guesthouses available.

Day 3: Nahin to Tha Khaek (220 km)

The final day completes the loop back to Thakhek. This is the longest riding day but mostly on good roads.

Highlights:

  • •Tham Pha Pa Cave: Optional stop at this cave with viewpoint
  • •Scenic Route 13: Join the main highway for the final stretch
  • •Mekong River views: Arrive back in Thakhek along the Mekong

Accommodation: Celebrate completion in Thakhek with better accommodation options.

4-Day Option

For a more relaxed pace, split Day 3 into two days with an overnight stop in a village along the way. This gives you more time to explore caves and enjoy the scenery without rushing.
