Scooter Rental in Siargao: Surf Island Complete Guide

Siargao is the Philippines' surf capital, digital nomad capital, and the country's most rideable island for visitors who like a side of beach with their travel. Cloud 9 reef, Magpupungko rock pools, the iconic palm-tree road, lagoon hopping. Complete guide to renting in General Luna and the rides that make Siargao what it is.

Why Siargao

Siargao is a teardrop-shaped island in the southern Philippines, 437 km² of palm trees, mangroves, surf reefs, and lagoons. The international airport (Sayak / IAO) opened in 2018 and the island has been on a rapid rise ever since — from surfer-only secret to one of Asia's top digital nomad / surf-yoga destinations.

For scooter renters, Siargao offers:

  • Compact size — most attractions within 30km of General Luna (the main town)
  • Iconic destinations: Cloud 9 reef, Magpupungko rock pools, Sugba Lagoon, the famous palm-tree road
  • Cheap rentals: ₱350-500 per day for a Honda Beat
  • Decent road quality (the main loop highway), questionable secondary roads
  • The friendliest scooter ecosystem in the Philippines — many shops cater specifically to long-stay visitors

Most travellers spend 5-10 days on Siargao. A scooter for the duration is the default — alternative transport is tricycle (slow, expensive over distance) or joining island-hopping van tours (locks you into someone else's schedule).

Where to Base

General Luna (recommended)

The main tourist town. Walking distance to Cloud 9 (the famous surf break), multiple beaches, restaurants, bars, yoga studios. Most accommodation options. Most scooter rental shops. The default base.

Cloud 9 area

Just north of General Luna, more concentrated around the surf scene. Famous wooden boardwalk to the Cloud 9 reef. Slightly more expensive, more surf-focused accommodation.

Pacifico (alternative)

A small village 30km north of General Luna. Quieter, less developed, more authentic. Several boutique resorts and homestays. Good for travellers who've already done the General Luna scene.

Pilar

North end of the island near the Sohoton Cove. Very quiet, fewer tourist amenities. Best for travellers focused on the northern attractions.

Siargao Pricing

  • Honda Beat 110 / Yamaha Mio 115: ₱350-500/day (~$6-9 USD)
  • Honda Click 125 / Yamaha Mio 125: ₱400-700/day (~$7-12 USD)
  • Yamaha NMax 155 / Honda PCX 160: ₱700-1,200/day
  • Honda XR 150L (manual): ₱800-1,500/day. Better for the rougher north-island roads.
  • Multi-day discount: 20-30% for 7+ days — Siargao shops are oriented at week-plus rentals
  • Monthly: ₱8,000-15,000 (~$140-270) for a Click on long-term rental — the digital nomad rate
  • Surfboard rack: ₱200-500/day add-on at surf-oriented shops

Deposit: ₱2,000-5,000 cash or passport photocopy.

Where to Rent in Siargao

Dozens of rental shops in General Luna — along Tourism Road, around Cloud 9, near the boat harbour. Quality varies. The good news: with so many shops competing for the long-stay nomad market, the better ones are easy to identify.

What to look for

  • Established shops with multiple Google reviews from 2024-2026. The newer shops sometimes operate informally and disappear at season's end.
  • Bikes less than 5 years old. Salt air destroys older bikes here. Old bikes break down on the rural roads.
  • Helmet that fits — full-face strongly preferred. Most shops only have half-shells; bring or buy your own ($15-25 at any motorcycle shop in General Luna).
  • Photo walk-around with the shop owner.
  • Test ride.
  • Working lights and brakes — important for the rural night rides home.

Hostel / hotel rentals

Many General Luna accommodations have rentals. Convenient — they'll often deliver to your door. Slightly more expensive but the support if anything goes wrong is real.

The Top Siargao Attractions

1. Cloud 9 Surf Reef + Boardwalk

The world-famous right-hand reef break that put Siargao on the map. The wooden boardwalk to the watching deck is a 5-min ride from General Luna. Best at high tide, especially during surf season (August-November). Not for beginner surfers — try Quicksilver Beach or Jacking Horse for learning waves.

Distance from General Luna: 3km / Free to walk the boardwalk

2. The Palm Tree Road (Maasin)

The single most-Instagrammed road in the Philippines. A 3-4km stretch of road in Maasin where coconut palms line both sides perfectly evenly. Best photographed in early morning light. Several pull-overs for the iconic shot. Ride through it on any north-bound trip.

Distance from General Luna: ~25km

3. Magpupungko Rock Pools

Natural tidal rock pools 30km northeast of General Luna in Pilar. Only accessible at low tide — check the tide chart before riding out. The rock pools form a chain of natural swimming holes carved into volcanic rock by waves. Includes a cliff-jump spot for the brave.

Time your visit around low tide. Half-day trip, easy paved road most of the way.

Distance from General Luna: 30km / Entry: ₱50

4. Sugba Lagoon (Del Carmen)

A wide green lagoon surrounded by mangrove forest. Reached via a 15-minute boat ride from Del Carmen. Once there: paddleboarding, kayaking, jumping platform. Most travellers do this as a day trip including the boat.

Distance from General Luna: 30km to Del Carmen / Boat: ~₱2,000-3,000 shared

5. Sohoton Cove + Bucas Grande

A separate small island accessible by boat from Pilar — caves, hidden lagoons, stingless jellyfish swimming. Full-day boat tour. Most travellers ride to Pilar and join the boat tour from there.

Distance from General Luna: 50km to Pilar / Boat tour: ~₱4,000-6,000

6. Pacifico Beach + Northern Rides

The northern half of the island — quieter, less developed, more authentic. Pacifico has empty beaches and a few boutique resorts. The ride north along the coastal road through palm forests is one of Siargao's great underrated rides.

Distance from General Luna: 30km north

7. Coconut Tree Hill (Tres Marias)

A panoramic viewpoint over the surrounding palm forests. Short ride from General Luna. Best at sunset. Free.

Distance from General Luna: 5km

Siargao-Specific Hazards

  • The main island highway loop is well-paved but secondary roads (heading inland, the smaller villages) can be rough. Honda Beat 110 will manage most; a Honda XR 150L handles them better.
  • Sand drift on coast roads after high tides. Slick patches near beach access points.
  • Tourist scooter density in General Luna evening hours. Many first-time-on-a-scooter visitors. Drunk-driving on weekend nights is a real problem — don't ride home from the bars after dark.
  • Stray dogs in rural areas, especially around villages.
  • Carabao (water buffalo) on rural roads — they don't move fast.
  • Typhoons June-November. Siargao is in the typhoon belt and was hit hard by Super Typhoon Odette in December 2021. Monitor PAGASA forecasts.
  • Heavy rain in monsoon floods low-lying roads briefly. Pull over and wait.

Best Time of Year for Siargao

  • March to June (dry, calm): general tourism peak. Calm seas, sunny weather. Surf is smaller (better for learners).
  • August to November (surf season): the biggest waves at Cloud 9. The serious surf crowd. Possible typhoon disruption.
  • December to February: trade winds. Surfable but choppy. Some rain.
  • December (Odette anniversary): some travellers avoid Siargao in the early December window post-2021. Most of the island has fully rebuilt; weather risk remains the consideration.

Final Thoughts

Siargao is the Philippines' most laid-back scooter destination. Surf in the morning, ride to a rock pool for lunch, palm-tree road in golden hour, dinner in General Luna. Repeat for a week, then a month, then realise you might just live here.

Pick March-June for the easiest weather, August-November for the surf. Rent a Honda Beat 110 if you're solo or just doing General Luna day trips, upgrade to a Click 125 or NMax 155 for the longer northern rides. Get the IDP at home, wear a real helmet, and ride sober at night. Then enjoy what most travellers say is their favourite stop in Southeast Asia.
